What the providers shipped

December 2024 had the usual holiday tech hiccups, with DigitalOcean shuffling managed database engines to NYC2 and finally opening up VPC-native networking and VPC peering to all. Not to be outdone, Linode extended their managed databases to more data centers and tinkered with LKE. Meanwhile, UpCloud introduced a fresh batch of cloud-native compute plans that let you enjoy hourly billing without the bundling headaches. All of these updates come at the same time that Linode's Kubernetes Engine is still stuck on Kubernetes 1.34, while UpCloud's object storage migration tool might finally ease the pain of moving data around. Just another day in the life of VPS provider shenanigans.
