Vultr Cloud Compute (1 GB) vs. UpCloud Balanced (1 GB)

vs.

My friend, I'm so glad you're here! Today I've spun up some brand new instance from UpCloud and Vultr to run some benchmarks on. Each instance was spun up with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS x64 and were created in the New York area (or close to it). Enough talk. Here's the data.

Conclusion

From the friendly robots:

After analyzing the benchmarks for both UpCloud's Balanced (1 GB) and Vultr's Cloud Compute (1 GB), it's clear that UpCloud's instance excels in Redis benchmark operations, achieving higher requests per second (rps) and lower latency across most commands compared to Vultr's instance. UpCloud also provides superior I/O performance with higher throughput and lower average latency for file operations, which indicates more efficient disk I/O handling. However, Vultr's CPU benchmark shows better performance with more events per second and lower average latency. Both providers show similar memory operation performance with low latencies and high throughputs. Considering the overall performance, UpCloud is better suited for workloads that demand high I/O efficiency and Redis operations, while Vultr is preferable for CPU-intensive tasks, given its stronger CPU performance metrics. For developers and sysadmins, UpCloud would be advantageous for applications relying on Redis and I/O operations, while Vultr might be more cost-effective for CPU-heavy applications.
