Welcome to another round of the VPS Showdown. Today I've spun up brand new instance from DigitalOcean and Linode and did some benchmarking. All instances were spun up with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS x64 and were created in the New York area (or close to it). Let's get into the numbers.

Conclusion

From the friendly robots:

When comparing the two instances, the DigitalOcean Premium Intel (1 GB) instance exhibits slightly higher raw performance across most metrics, with superior Redis benchmarks and better I/O and CPU performance, though it comes at a higher cost. The Linode Nanode (1 GB) instance, despite using a less powerful AMD processor, shows comparable performance in many areas, especially in throughput and memory operations, but falls short in Redis operations and slightly in I/O latency. Ideal use cases for DigitalOcean's instance would be applications requiring high-speed data handling and low Redis latency, such as high-traffic websites or real-time data processing. On the other hand, Linode's Nanode might be more suitable for cost-sensitive deployments where CPU-intensive tasks or slightly less critical data processing are required, balancing between performance and budget.
