Welcome to another round of the VPS Showdown. Today I spun up fresh instances from DigitalOcean and Linode and did some benchmarking. Each instance was running Ubuntu 26.04 LTS x64 and all resided in or around the New York / New Jersey area. Enough talk. Here's the data.

Conclusion

From the friendly robots:

The Linode instance (2 GB) outperforms the DigitalOcean Premium Intel instance (1 GB) overall, particularly in CPU-intensive operations as shown by Redis SET achieving 76,923 requests per second (rps) compared to DigitalOcean's 64,350 rps, and MySQL bulk insert rates of 127,606 transactions per second (tps) versus DigitalOcean's 50,000 tps. While both offer similar file I/O performance, the Linode instance's higher CPU capability makes it superior for CPU-heavy workloads, whereas DigitalOcean provides slightly better file I/O and memory performance, making it a better choice for applications that rely more on storage throughput.
